WHAT IS YOGA?
Although yoga has been around for a few thousand years, it has infiltrated American culture primarily in the latter half of the last century.
The word yoga literally translates as connection or union, sometimes as yoke. So in yoga we “yoke” or build a connection with our mind, our breath, our spirit, and our body.
In addition to the physical aspect of the practice, the yogic path also includes guidelines for more ethical living. However, yoga is NOT a religion. Yoga invites the student to use the powers of meditation, breath, and asanas (or physical postures) to bring enlightenment with whatever higher power or ideals the student connects with, perhaps just connecting them with their own higher self.
Yoga also greatly impacts the health of the physical body, increasing flexibility and muscle strength, as well as lowering blood pressure and aiding the body in the release of impurities. Many physicians today are recommending yoga to their patients to alleviate chronic pain, low back problems, and insomnia, for example.
At Laketown Healing Arts, we strive to provide a safe and healthy environment for students to explore the world of yoga, while respecting their body’s needs and limitations.
All classes are beginner friendly and we provide mats and props so all you need to bring is you! We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can move freely in (no belts or tight waistbands) and if possible come to class with an empty stomach.
Private yoga training is also available for individuals or small groups, please contact us for more information.
